Recycling!

Daniels Run students have been visiting Mrs. Huberman Hayes in the science technology lab for the past few weeks to learn about the importance of recycling and to take a virtual fieldtrip to the Material Recovery Facility in Manassas, VA.  This facility is the place where all recyclables go from every Fairfax County Public school.

Students learned about single stream recycling which means anything that can be recycled goes into one dumpster, no need sort and separate anymore.  The Material Recovery Facility has workers and machines to sort everything, and then a baler will compact the separated materials and get them ready to be transported to manufacturers.  These manufacturers make new products out of the recyclable bottles, cans and paper.

During the lesson, students were reminded of why it is so important to recycle.  Recycling helps conserve our natural resources, such as water, land, forests, minerals and fossil fuels.  Recycling also helps prevent the loss of animal habitat and helps prevent pollution.

Finally, students participated in a recycling sort of items used in the cafeteria.  Daniels Run officially begins recycling in the cafeteria on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013.  We are asking for parent volunteers to help students in the cafeteria throughout the entire Recycling Kick-off Week, Monday, Jan. 14, through Friday, Jan. 18.  If you would like to volunteer, please go to www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0D44AEAA22A13-recycling and sign up for one or more days and times.

Daniels Run has many activities planned for Recycling Kick-Off Week.  Recycling posters made by SCA students, with the help of Ms. Godek and Ms. Large, will be hung with pride throughout the building.  On the DRES Morning News, students will show off their acting skills with skits, including a recycling rap created by some talented students thanks to the direction of Mrs. Leone.  During PE, Mr. Kahnell and Mrs. Ullrich will be teaching some fun recycling games. These are just a few of the fun recycling activities planned for the week!
